A new way of looking at progress

I help to clarify writers’ goals coaching when they work with me to write their books.

The goal of writing a book, I advise, should never—solely—be to publish it.

It’s great to want to publish it. It just shouldn’t be your sole reason for writing it because, if it is, you probably won’t get to THE END.

These are real goals writers have shared with me in our fact finding calls:

‘I want to see my daughter’s smile when I put the book into her hands.’

‘To share my hard-earned knowledge for others’ benefit.’

‘I’m going to write, against all the odds, because only I can say this.’

Each writer’s true goal is highly personal to them.

And then, there’s the question of how do you reach your goal?

Feeling pressure about how can be a real blocker to writing daily. So hold the wise words of my friend and fellow book coach Amy Goldmacher close:

‘Measure progress by the ACT, not the outcome’
