Bio

Lawyer, Writer, Editor, and Book Coach

Since I opened for business in 2020, I’ve helped over 80 writers.
Some of those writers told me what they thought of my help.
I edit by bringing sensitive and educated judgment to your words.
Editing is not only about the words on the page. We talk through your book plans and problems.
We work out the specific risks that threaten to prevent you from finishing your book and effective ways to overcome them.
Once you have written your book (or book proposal) I show you how to keep control of the publishing process.
After getting an MA in Classics from Oxford in the 1980s, I went into the law and spent my career in law firms and banks in London.
In 2018 I decided to write my first book (Blind Chance, published in 2021).
My second book (Dear New Book Coach) was published in 2025.
And my third book… ?

Third book: WIP

Well, having practiced law for nearly four decades, I grew interested in exploring exactly what law (in England) governs writing and the related professions of book coaching and editing.
There are books on copyright law, and on writing online as a journalist, but there is no book I know of in the UK that gives a comprehensive explanation of the law for writers of books and their editors and coaches.
So I am writing it.
The Legal Index: Questions of Coaching, Editing, and Writing Law will be published in 2026. There’s a bit more information here.
If you would like news of its publication, drop your email here.

Are you in need of my service?

If there’s one thing I know…

A writer is never ready to hand over their ideas, their pages, their full manuscript to an editor.
But the truth is, we are never “ready” for editing.

Do you feel Unready?

I help writers organise and frame their ideas, and express them clearly, so they write a marketable book.
